User Conduct & Restrictions
Welcome to the 1990 Web Archive. This platform is dedicated to the preservation, study, and ethical access to early internet history. By accessing, browsing, or utilizing our services, you agree to comply with the following conduct standards and usage restrictions. Failure to adhere may result in access suspension or permanent termination.
1. General Acceptable Use
Access to the archive is provided for educational, historical, research, and personal preservation purposes. Users are expected to interact with the platform responsibly, respecting the digital heritage of the early web and the rights of original content creators.
Preservation First: Our mission is to safeguard internet history. Any activity that threatens the integrity, availability, or authenticity of archived materials is strictly prohibited.
2. Prohibited Activities
Users must not engage in, facilitate, or attempt the following:
- Distributing malware, viruses, exploits, or malicious scripts through any interface or upload mechanism.
- Impersonating archive staff, researchers, or historical web entities to deceive or gain unauthorized access.
- Using the platform to host, distribute, or promote illegal content, hate speech, or non-consensual explicit material.
- Attempting to bypass access controls, authentication measures, or geo-restrictions through unauthorized means.
- Engaging in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, brute-forcing, or resource exhaustion against archive infrastructure.
3. Content & Data Usage Restrictions
While we strive to provide open access to historical web content, certain materials are restricted to comply with copyright, privacy, and ethical guidelines:
- Commercial Redistribution: Bulk downloading, scraping, or repackaging of archived pages for commercial sale or subscription services requires explicit written licensing.
- Personal Data Protection: Pages containing sensitive personal information (PII) that was publicly posted without consent may be redacted or restricted upon verified request.
- Copyright Compliance: Content removed at the request of rights holders or their authorized agents will be restricted. We comply with DMCA and international copyright preservation frameworks.
- Academic & Media Use: Researchers and journalists may use snapshots for commentary, criticism, or historical analysis under fair use principles, provided proper attribution is given.
4. Automated Access & Scraping
Automated tools, bots, and crawlers must adhere to strict rate limits and protocol guidelines to preserve server stability and archival integrity:
- Unregistered automated access is limited to 10 requests per minute per IP address.
- All crawlers must identify themselves via a valid User-Agent string and provide a contact email.
- Bulk historical datasets require an approved Researcher API key and must follow our `robots-archive.txt` directives.
- Abusive scraping patterns will trigger temporary IP blocks and may result in permanent hardware bans.
5. Account Security & Shared Access
Users are solely responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of their account credentials and for all activities conducted under their account. Sharing accounts, particularly premium or researcher tiers, violates our terms and compromises access logging essential for archival accountability.
6. Enforcement & Consequences
Violations of this policy will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Enforcement actions may include, but are not limited to:
- Formal warning with required acknowledgment
- Temporary suspension of browsing or API privileges
- Permanent revocation of access and IP/hardware blacklisting
- Referral to legal counsel for severe or repeated violations involving copyright infringement, data theft, or malicious activity
Appeals: Users subject to restriction may submit an appeal via appeals@1990webarchive.com. All decisions are final after review by our preservation ethics board.
7. Policy Amendments
The 1990 Web Archive reserves the right to modify, update, or revoke this policy at any time to adapt to evolving legal standards, preservation challenges, or infrastructure changes. Continued use of the platform following the posting of revised terms constitutes acceptance of those changes. Significant updates will be announced via platform banners and researcher mailing lists.
