Why Digital Heritage Matters

Unlike physical artifacts, digital content is inherently ephemeral. Links rot, servers shut down, and formats become obsolete. Between 1990 and 2000, millions of websites were created, shared, and lost forever. Digital heritage is the practice of recognizing, preserving, and providing access to historically significant digital materials.

Our archive treats early web pages not as mere technical documents, but as cultural expressions. Homepage builders, web rings, MIDI background music, visitor counters, and table-based layouts were the visual language of a community discovering how to communicate globally. Preserving them preserves a unique moment in human digital history.

Our technical workflow follows open standards and redundant storage protocols. Each submission undergoes validation, fingerprinting, and cross-referencing against existing archival databases to prevent duplication and ensure integrity.

We use WARC (Web ARChive) format as our backbone, supplemented by structured JSON-LD metadata for searchability. Emulation layers allow researchers to view pages exactly as they rendered on period-appropriate browsers, while modern viewers provide accessibility and responsive layouts without altering the source.
