William Michael McDonough (born January 13, 1951) is an American architect, author, and environmentalist known for pioneering the fields of sustainable design and regenerative architecture. He is the co-author of the influential book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things (2002) and a co-founder of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. McDonough's work challenges conventional notions of sustainability, advocating instead for design systems that actively restore ecological and social well-being.
His architectural firm, William McDonough + Partners, has completed numerous award-winning projects that integrate daylighting, natural ventilation, and non-toxic materials, significantly influencing modern green building practices worldwide.
Early Life & Education
McDonough was born in Wichita, Kansas, to an Irish Catholic family. He developed an early interest in both science and the built environment, often spending time sketching structures while studying natural ecosystems. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Kansas in 1973 and subsequently pursued his Master of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, graduating in 1977.
During his academic years, McDonough studied under prominent architects and began developing his interdisciplinary approach to design, blending engineering, ecology, and humanistic values. His thesis focused on the integration of building performance with regional ecological systems, a theme that would define his entire career.
Design Philosophy
McDonough's core philosophy revolves around the concept of regenerative design, which posits that human systems should not merely reduce harm but actively contribute to the restoration of natural and social capital. Cradle to Cradle
In collaboration with chemist Michael Braungart, McDonough developed the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) certification framework, which evaluates products and buildings across five categories: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy, water stewardship, and social fairness. Unlike traditional sustainability standards that focus on minimizing negative impacts, C2C certifies that materials are safe, circular, and responsibly sourced.
The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, founded in 2006, has certified over 1,200 products and thousands of buildings globally. The framework has influenced corporate sustainability strategies across industries, from textiles and packaging to industrial manufacturing and urban infrastructure.
Legacy & Recognition
McDonough's contributions to architecture and environmental design have been widely recognized. He has received the AIA's Award for Architecture, the LEED Fellow designation, and honorary doctorates from multiple institutions. In 2010, Forbes named him one of the "Green Heroes" of the decade, and his book Cradle to Cradle has been translated into 18 languages.
