Asylum & Refugee Coverage Policy

01 Purpose & Scope

This policy establishes mandatory standards for all Aevum News editorial, photographic, and digital staff when covering asylum seekers, refugees, stateless persons, and displacement crises. It applies to all published content, including articles, multimedia, social media posts, and internal briefing materials.

Aevum News recognizes that displacement coverage carries profound ethical weight. Our commitment is to report with precision, dignity, and contextual depth, avoiding sensationalism, dehumanizing language, or politicized framing that compromises factual integrity.

02 Editorial Standards

• Person-First Language: Always refer to individuals as "asylum seekers," "refugees," or "displaced persons." Avoid terms that imply illegality, criminality, or homogeneity (e.g., "illegal aliens," "floods of migrants").
• Contextual Reporting: Every story must address root causes (conflict, persecution, climate displacement, economic collapse) and distinguish between voluntary migration and forced displacement.
• Verification Mandate: Claims regarding numbers, origins, routes, or government policies must be cross-referenced with at least two independent sources (UNHCR, IOM, official government data, or peer-reviewed research).
• Visual Ethics: Photography and video must respect subject dignity. Avoid imagery that exploits trauma, depicts minors without consent, or reduces human beings to statistics or backgrounds.
• Balanced Framing: Present multiple perspectives including affected communities, legal experts, humanitarian organizations, and government officials, without false equivalence between verified facts and unverified claims.

03 Legal & Ethical Compliance

Aevum News operates in strict accordance with international humanitarian law, press freedom conventions, and host-jurisdiction regulations. All staff must comply with:

• Non-refoulement principles and UNHCR reporting guidelines
• GDPR, CCPA, and local data protection laws regarding personal information
• Court injunctions, national security restrictions, and conflict-zone press accords
• Internal conflict-of-interest disclosures when covering politically sensitive asylum debates

Content that could compromise ongoing asylum proceedings, endanger vulnerable individuals, or violate court orders must be withheld or redacted pending legal review.

04 Source Protection & Data Handling

Journalists covering asylum and refugee topics will frequently interact with traumatized, undocumented, or politically vulnerable individuals. The following protocols are mandatory:

• Informed Consent: Clearly explain how interviews, images, and personal data will be used. Consent must be voluntary, documented, and revocable.
• Anonymization: Default to pseudonyms and obscured visuals for minors, trafficking survivors, or individuals facing credible threats of persecution.
• Secure Storage: All raw interviews, location data, and identifiable documents must be encrypted and stored on Aevum’s secure editorial drive. Metadata must be stripped before publication.
• Emergency Protocol: If a source’s safety is compromised during reporting, immediately contact the Security Desk. Publication may be paused or altered to mitigate risk.

05 Training & Accountability

All editorial and photographic staff must complete annual training on:

• Trauma-informed interviewing techniques
• International refugee law & asylum procedures
• Cultural competency & intersectional reporting
• Digital security & source encryption

Compliance is monitored by the Editorial Standards Board. Violations are assessed on a case-by-case basis and may result in content revision, mandatory retraining, or disciplinary action per HR policy.

06 Reporting Violations

Employees, sources, or readers who identify content that violates this policy may report it through secure channels. All reports are reviewed within 72 hours. Retaliation against reporters is strictly prohibited and grounds for immediate termination.
