Engage the parking brake. Place wheel chocks on the rear wheels. Locate the front jacking points (usually reinforced pinch welds or factory pads). Lift the front end slightly, then position jack stands under the designated frame points. Lower the jack onto the stands and remove it.
Loosen lug nuts slightly with the wheel on the ground, then remove them once the car is fully lifted. Use a breaker bar for best leverage. Remove the wheel and set it aside on a clean surface.
Locate the caliper slide bolts (usually 10mm or 13mm on the back). Remove them and carefully slide the caliper off the rotor. Do not let it hang by the brake hose. Use a bungee cord or hook to suspend it from the control arm. Remove the old brake pads.
Some rotors have a center retaining bolt; remove it if present. The rotor should slide off the hub. If it's rusted in place, tap the back of the rotor evenly with a rubber mallet or hammer. Avoid prying between the rotor and hub to prevent damage.
Use a wire brush and brake cleaner to thoroughly clean the wheel hub surface, bearing area, and caliper mounting bracket. Any rust or debris will cause rotor runout and brake vibration.
Place the new rotor onto the hub. Apply high-temperature brake grease to the caliper slide pins and the back of the new pads (not the friction surface!). Mount the rotor by aligning with the hub studs. Use a brake piston tool or C-clamp to slowly compress the caliper piston fully.
Place the new pads into the caliper bracket, ensuring they seat fully. Reinstall the caliper over the rotor and hand-tighten the slide bolts. Apply anti-squeal compound to the back of the pads if not pre-coated.
Torque the caliper slide bolts to manufacturer spec (typically 18-25 ft-lbs). Mount the wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts. Lower the vehicle to the ground, then torque lug nuts in a star pattern to spec (usually 80-100 ft-lbs). Remove jack stands.
Crucial for new brakes! Find a safe, empty road. Accelerate to 35-40 mph, then firmly brake to 5 mph without stalling. Repeat 6-8 times. Allow brakes to cool naturally (no driving through the process). This transfers an even layer of pad material to the rotor for optimal stopping power.
