Every year, thousands of DIY mechanics suffer preventable injuries. This checklist is designed to cover the essentials — not every edge case. Your safety is the number one priority. If something doesn't feel right, stop and reassess. No project is worth your life.

1. Workspace Setup

Before any work begins — prepare your environment

Work in a well-ventilated area — open garage doors or use a fan. Never run an engine in an enclosed space. Critical
Ensure adequate lighting — use a work light or headlamp so you can clearly see every connection and component you're handling.
Clear the workspace of clutter, grease, and slip hazards. Keep walkways clean. A slip under a lift can be catastrophic. Critical
Park on a flat, level, solid surface. Use wheel chocks on the wheels that remain on the ground.
Keep the area free of flammable materials (paper, rags, gasoline containers) when working with sparks or heat. Critical
Ensure children and pets are away from the workspace while you're working. Important
Have a first aid kit nearby and accessible. Know its contents.
Check that fire extinguisher is charged and within arm's reach. Use a Class B or ABC-rated extinguisher. Critical

2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Your first line of defense against injury

Wear safety glasses or goggles at all times. Debris, chemicals, and snapping cables can cause permanent eye damage. Critical
Use mechanic's gloves — cut-resistant for sharp parts, chemical-resistant for fluids. Change gloves if contaminated.
Wear closed-toe, steel-toe shoes. No sandals or flip-flops. Dropping a wrench or jack stand on your foot is no joke. Critical
Avoid loose clothing, ties, dangling jewelry, or anything that can catch in moving parts. Critical
Tie back long hair and wear a cap or bandana to keep it secured.
Use a respirator or mask when working with brake dust, sanding, exhaust components, or spray painting. Important
Wear ear protection when using loud power tools (impact wrenches, air compressors, grinders).

3. Vehicle Preparation

Safely prepare the vehicle before working on it

Engage the parking brake (emergency brake) fully before any work. Critical
Place the vehicle in Park (automatic) or first gear / reverse (manual). Critical
Disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on electrical systems, airbags, or near high-voltage components (hybrids/EVs). Critical
For hybrids/EVs: Verify high-voltage system is deactivated using manufacturer procedures. Do NOT guess — look up the specific procedure. Critical
Allow the engine and exhaust to cool completely before starting work. Burns from hot surfaces are extremely common. Critical
Check that fluids are not dangerously hot (coolant, power steering, transmission). Pressure-relieve radiator caps only when cool. 💡 Coolant can remain scalding for hours after shutdown.
Release brake system pressure before disconnecting brake lines or calipers. Important
Have the correct service manual or repair guide open and ready. Know what you're doing before you start. Recommended

4. Lifting & Supporting the Vehicle

The most dangerous part of DIY — get this right

Never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle's weight. This is the #1 cause of DIY fatalities. Critical
Use at least two jack stands — one on each side. Place them at manufacturer-specified lift points. Critical
Inspect jack stands before use — check for cracks, bent pins, worn surfaces, or loose components. Replace if damaged. Critical
Inspect the hydraulic floor jack — check for leaks, damaged cylinders, or worn lifting pads. Important
After placing on jack stands, give the vehicle a firm shake test to confirm stability before going underneath. Critical
If using a two-post or four-post lift, verify it is inspected and rated for your vehicle's weight. Check safety locks engage properly. Critical
Never exceed the weight rating of any jack, stand, or lift. Know your vehicle's weight and compare. 💡 Find your vehicle's curb weight online or in the owner's manual.
Have a second person available when lifting heavy components or working under the vehicle. Recommended

5. Tools & Equipment Safety

Use the right tool, the right way, every time

Use the correct tool for every job. Never use a screwdriver as a pry bar, pliers as a wrench, or the wrong size socket. Critical
Inspect tools before use — cracked handles, worn socket teeth, damaged ratchet heads, or frayed cords should be repaired or replaced. Important
Use a torque wrench for critical fasteners — wheel lug nuts, cylinder head bolts, suspension components. Overtightening causes failures. Critical
Keep electrical tools and extension cords away from water and fluids. Use GFCI outlets. Check cords for damage. Important
When using compressed air (impact guns, blow guns), wear safety glasses. Never point at yourself or others. Use a nozzle guard. Critical
Disconnect batteries and power tools before changing bits, blades, or accessories. 💡 "Lock-out, tag-out" isn't just for factories.
Store sharp tools and loose bolts properly when not in use. A dropped wrench from height can seriously injure someone. Recommended

6. Chemical & Fluid Safety

Handle automotive fluids and chemicals with care

Never mix incompatible chemicals — especially battery acid, drain cleaners, and brake fluid. Read labels carefully. Critical
Dispose of used oil, filters, and fluids properly. Take to an auto parts store or recycling center. Never pour down drains or on ground. Critical
Wear chemical-resistant gloves when handling oil, brake fluid, coolant, gasoline, or adhesives. Important
Keep all chemicals in original labeled containers with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) accessible. 💡 Never transfer chemicals into food/drink containers.
Keep a spill kit or absorbent pads on hand for fluid spills. Contain spills immediately to prevent slip hazards and environmental damage.
Store gasoline and flammable liquids in approved containers, away from heat sources and sparks. Critical
Wash hands thoroughly after working with automotive chemicals — even if wearing gloves. Some chemicals absorb through skin. Recommended

7. System-Specific Safety

Extra precautions for high-risk systems

Airbag / SRS systems: Disconnect battery and wait at least 15 minutes (some manufacturers recommend 30) before working near airbags, steering columns, or dash components. Critical
Brake systems: Never introduce moisture or oil to brake components. Bleed brakes according to specification. Contaminated brakes can cause total brake failure. Critical
Exhaust work: Ensure exhaust is cool. Watch for carbon monoxide — never run the engine indoors or without proper exhaust routing. Critical
Steering & suspension: These systems are under high pressure and tension. Never loosen components while the wheel is off the ground unless you understand the forces involved. Important
Fuel system: Relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting lines. Keep sparks and flames away. Use a fire extinguisher nearby. Critical
Radiator / coolant: Never remove the radiator cap on a hot engine. Coolant is under pressure and can spray at 200°F+. 💡 If the engine is hot, wait at least 2-3 hours or use the "two-finger test" on the upper hose — if hot, wait more.

8. After Work & Completion

Finishing strong — don't skip the last steps

Verify all fasteners are tightened to specification. Re-check torques after 50–100 miles for critical components. Critical
Double-check nothing is left under or in the vehicle — tools, gloves, rags. A leftover wrench can cause catastrophic damage. Critical
Lower the vehicle slowly and carefully — inspect clearance as it comes down.
Reconnect the battery and verify all electrical systems are functioning (lights, warnings, accessories). Important
Test the repair in a safe area — check brakes at low speed first, listen for unusual noises, verify steering response.
Check fluid levels after the repair — oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid. Look for leaks. Important
Clean up your workspace — dispose of waste properly, store tools, and sweep the area. A clean garage is a safe garage. Recommended
