InkWell is an independent digital publishing company founded in 2019. We build platforms and communities where thoughtful writing thrives and ideas find their audience.
We believe that powerful ideas shouldn't be confined behind paywalls or buried in academic journals. InkWell exists to create a space where anyone can discover, share, and engage with the written word.
Founded by a team of journalists, developers, and writers frustrated with the state of digital publishing, we set out to build something different β a platform that puts readers and writers first, not advertisers or algorithms.
"The written word is the most powerful technology humans have ever created. We're just building better shelves for it."
β Amara Osei, Co-Founder & CEO
What started in a shared apartment in Brooklyn now serves readers across 60+ countries.
These aren't just words on a wall β they're the principles that shape every decision we make as a company.
Every article, every headline, every character carries weight. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of clarity, accuracy, and integrity in writing.
Knowledge should be free. We believe in keeping our platform ad-free and accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or income.
We don't build features in isolation. Every product decision is shaped by the voices of our readers and writers who make this platform possible.
We invest heavily in learning and development. Our team is encouraged to read, write, experiment, and fail β because that's how innovation happens.
From open financials to public roadmaps, we believe our stakeholders deserve to know how we operate. No smoke, no mirrors, just honest business.
We measure success not by clicks or impressions, but by the real-world impact our platform has on readers' lives and writers' careers.
A diverse team of writers, engineers, designers, and dreamers united by a love for the written word.
From a two-person startup to a global publishing platform β here's how we got here.
Amara and James meet at a hackathon in Brooklyn. They bond over their shared frustration with paywalled journalism and decide to build something better.
InkWell launches with 20 articles from freelance writers. Within a month, we hit 10,000 unique visitors and realize people are hungry for ad-free content.
We raise $2.5M in seed funding from media-focused VCs. Our team grows to 15, and we hire our first Head of Design and Head of Content.
InkWell opens offices in London and Tokyo. We launch support for 8 languages and hit 50,000 monthly readers. Our writer community reaches 500 contributors.
$12M Series A led by Accel. We rebuild the entire platform from scratch with a focus on performance, accessibility, and developer experience.
InkWell surpasses 180,000 monthly readers with 2,400+ published articles. We launch InkWell Academy, a free writing education program, and open applications for new contributors worldwide.
We believe a great company culture is built on trust, creativity, and a shared passion for what we do.
While we're remote-first, we maintain co-working spaces and gathering spots in key cities.
We're always looking for passionate people who believe in the power of words. Whether you're an engineer, writer, designer, or operator β there's a place for you at InkWell.
