What Are Web Guestbooks?

Before social media, web guestbooks were the primary way visitors left messages on early websites. Powered by CGI scripts, Perl, and later ASP/PHP, they featured signature pads, animated GIFs, visitor counters, and frame-based layouts. They fostered tight-knit online communities and are now invaluable digital artifacts of early internet culture.

Preservation Methodology

We capture guestbooks using period-accurate rendering engines, preserve underlying CGI/Perl scripts in sandboxed environments, and archive database dumps where available. Dynamic features like hit counters and signature animations are emulated to match original behavior.
