About the 1990 Web Archive

The 1990 Web Archive is a non-profit digital preservation initiative dedicated to capturing, cataloging, and providing long-term access to the earliest decades of the World Wide Web. Founded by historians, librarians, and network engineers, our mission is to ensure that the foundational culture, technology, and communication patterns of the early internet remain accessible for academic research, historical documentation, and public education.

Unlike commercial web caches, our archive prioritizes structural integrity and contextual metadata. Every preserved URL is accompanied by server logs, protocol specifications, and visual renderings calibrated to period-accurate user agents. We maintain strict neutrality in collection policies, preserving both prominent institutional sites and ephemeral personal publications.
