The 1990 Web Archive is a systematic digital preservation initiative dedicated to capturing, cataloging, and providing scholarly and public access to web content originating between 1990 and 1999. As early internet infrastructure proved highly ephemeral, this project employs distributed crawling, protocol emulation, and metadata standardization to reconstruct the technological, cultural, and communicative landscape of the pre-commercial and early commercial World Wide Web.
By preserving static documents, client-side scripts, multimedia assets, and server-side configurations, the archive ensures that the structural evolution of the web remains accessible for historical analysis, educational curricula, and digital heritage research. All preserved materials are stored using WARC-compliant formats and indexed through OAIS-aligned metadata schemas.
