Why Tiled Backgrounds?

📉 Bandwidth Constraints

56k modems made downloading a single 50KB background image painful. A 2KB repeating tile loaded instantly and covered the entire viewport.

🖥️ Resolution Diversity

Screens ranged from 640x480 to 1024x768. Tiled backgrounds scaled infinitely without pixelation or empty space.

🎨 CSS Limitations

CSS2 background attachment was experimental. Using the `` HTML attribute with a small GIF was the standard.
