Ad Hominem
Latin: "to the person"An argument that attacks the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, rather than addressing the substance of the argument itself.
"You can't trust Dr. Chen's climate research because she was arrested during a student protest in 2008."
Analysis: The researcher's past behavior is irrelevant to the validity of her scientific data or methodology.
Redirect focus to the actual claim: "Let's examine the data and methodology used in the study, regardless of the author's personal history."
Straw Man
Misrepresentation fallacyDistorting, exaggerating, or misrepresenting an opponent's argument to make it easier to attack or refute.
Person A: "We should allocate more funding to public education."
Person B: "So you want to bankrupt the entire country and let crime run rampant?"
Analysis: Person B substitutes a moderate policy suggestion with an extreme, unarguable position.
Clarify and restate the original position: "That's not what I said. I proposed a targeted 5% budget reallocation, not systemic defunding of other sectors."
False Dilemma
False dichotomy / Either-or fallacyPresenting two opposing viewpoints or outcomes as the only possibilities, when in fact more alternatives exist.
"Either we ban all vehicles to save the environment, or we accept that Earth is doomed."
Analysis: This ignores viable middle-ground solutions like renewable energy transition, public transit investment, and carbon capture technology.
Introduce excluded alternatives: "Those aren't the only options. We can pursue regulated emissions standards alongside green infrastructure development."
Slippery Slope
Causal chain fallacyAsserting that a relatively minor first step will inevitably lead to a chain of related (often negative) events, without providing evidence for the causal links.
"If we allow students to use AI tools for drafting essays, soon they won't know how to write at all, universities will lose their standards, and higher education will collapse."
Analysis: Each step assumes a deterministic cascade without demonstrating why one would necessarily cause the next.
Request evidence for each causal link: "What specific mechanism would prevent educators from adapting assessment methods to preserve writing proficiency?"
