Replacing brake pads and rotors is one of the most critical maintenance tasks a DIY mechanic can master. Worn brakes compromise stopping power, damage rotors, and can lead to catastrophic failure if ignored. This guide walks you through safely removing, inspecting, and installing a complete front brake assembly.

Apply the parking brake and chock the rear wheels. Loosen the lug nuts on all wheels slightly before lifting. Raise one side of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
Locate the two caliper guide bolts (usually 12mm or 14mm). Remove them carefully. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake line. Hang it securely with wire or a bungee from the suspension control arm. Remove the old brake pads and note their orientation.
If your caliper sits directly on the rotor, remove the single retaining bolt to free it. Some rotors have a secondary axle nut or are seized by rust. Use a mallet to tap the rotor back and forth to break it free. Never use excessive force that could crack the hub.
Clean the hub surface thoroughly. Any rust or debris will cause the new rotor to sit unevenly, leading to vibration.
Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant (not anti-seize!) to the caliper slide pins, bracket ears, and pad abutment clips. This ensures smooth caliper movement and prevents squealing. Install the new hardware clips onto the bracket.
Place new pads into the bracket. Use a C-clamp or brake piston tool to slowly compress the caliper piston back into its bore. Wipe away any excess brake fluid that spills over and top off the master cylinder reservoir before it runs dry.
Slide the caliper back over the new pads and reinstall the guide bolts.
