Step-by-Step Process

Choose your path: restore cloudy lenses or replace damaged assemblies entirely.

1

Prep & Mask

Clean the headlight surface with soap and water. Apply painter's tape around the lens to protect paint. Dry completely before proceeding.

2

Coarse Sanding (300-600 Grit)

Wet-sand the entire surface using circular motions. Keep the surface wet to prevent deep scratches. Continue until the haze is uniform and yellowing is gone.

3

Progressive Sanding (1000-3000 Grit)

Move to finer grits sequentially. Each step removes scratches from the previous grit. The lens should look uniformly cloudy when finished.

4

Polish & Clarify

Apply a plastic polish or compound with a buffing pad. Work in sections until the lens becomes transparent again. Wipe clean with IPA.

5

UV Sealant Application

Apply 2-3 coats of clear coat or UV-resistant sealant. Allow 10-15 minutes between coats. Cures in 24 hours. Prevents future oxidation.

โš ๏ธ Skipping UV sealant will result in re-yellowing within 3-6 months.
1

Safety First & Battery Disconnect

Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent short circuits. Remove any under-cowls or splash shields blocking access.

2

Locate Fasteners & Electrical Connectors

Identify mounting bolts (usually 2-4 per assembly). Unplug the wiring harness by pressing the locking tab and pulling straight back.

3

Remove Old Assembly

With a second person supporting the weight if needed, carefully remove fasteners and gently pull the assembly outward. Note gasket placement.

4

Transfer & Install

If reusing bulbs, transfer them carefully. Align the new assembly with mounting points. Secure fasteners hand-tight first, then torque to spec.

5

Alignment & Testing

Reconnect battery. Turn on headlights and check aim. Adjust if necessary using factory adjustment screws. Reassemble panels and test lights at night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common headlight project questions.

How long does a headlight restoration last?+

With proper UV sealant application, restorations typically last 12โ€“24 months. Without sealant, yellowing returns in 3โ€“6 months. Ceramic coatings can extend lifespan to 3+ years.

Should I restore or replace my headlights?+

If the housing is cracked, leaking, or bulbs are burned out, replacement is best. If only the lens is oxidized/cloudy, restoration saves 70โ€“80% of the cost and restores 90%+ clarity.

Can I do this on LED or HID headlights?+

Yes. The restoration process applies to the plastic lens, not the light source. However, cracked LED/HID housings often require full assembly replacement since internal components are sealed.

Do I need a professional alignment after replacement?+

Most modern vehicles retain alignment if mounts aren't damaged. However, we recommend verifying aim using our guide's alignment steps to ensure optimal road visibility and legal compliance.
