Before cloud computing and same-day delivery, Amazon began as a modest online bookstore launched from a garage in Bellevue, Washington. This collection documents the complete digital evolution of Amazon.com from its initial DNS registration in 1994 through the peak of the dot-com boom in 1999.
The 1990 Web Archive has preserved early HTML 3.2 source code, Netscape Navigator-optimized layouts, table-based navigation structures, and the original CSS-less design philosophy that defined the mid-90s web. Each snapshot is cryptographically sealed and rendered in period-accurate browsers for academic and historical review.
"We wanted to be the most customer-centric company on earth. The web gave us a platform to do that at scale, even when 'scale' meant a few thousand orders a month." — Internal 1995 engineering memo, recovered from early server backups.
