About Gopher

Gopher was a distributed document delivery protocol widely used from 1991 to 1993. It organized information into hierarchical menus, accessible via simple text clients.

Although deprecated by the W3C in 1993 due to the rise of HTML, thousands of Gopher servers remained active through the mid-1990s, hosting academic, government, and BBS content.

Preservation Status

The 1990 Web Archive has recovered and mirrored over 1.8 million Gopher selectors across 4,200+ hosts. All content is statically archived and rendered in-browser via our Gopher client emulator.

Binary files and Telnet endpoints are sandboxed or replaced with static snapshots for security.
