Workspace Safety Setup
A well-organized workspace prevents accidents and improves efficiency.
- Ventilation: Always work in a well-ventilated area. Use exhaust fans or open bays when running engines or using chemicals.
- Lighting: Minimum 500 lux (50 foot-candles) for detailed work. Use LED work lights with adjustable arms.
- Floor Conditions: Keep floors dry, clean, and free of oil spills. Use absorbent pads or spill kits immediately.
- Fire Safety: Keep a Class ABC fire extinguisher (minimum 5 lb) within 10 feet of your workspace. Check pressure monthly.
- Organization: Use tool chests, pegboards, and labeled bins. Never leave tools or parts on the floor where they can cause tripping or rolling hazards.
Tool & Equipment Safety
Cracked sockets, worn ratchets, or modified tools can fail catastrophically under torque. Inspect all tools before each use.
Safe Handling Practices
- Always use the correct socket/wrench size for the fastener. Avoid impact drivers on fragile or calibrated components.
- When using torque wrenches, set the value before use and never use them as pry bars or ratchets.
- Disconnect battery negative terminal before working on electrical systems or fuel lines.
- Secure power tools with safety guards intact. Keep cords away from cutting edges and hot surfaces.
- Store compressed gas cylinders upright, chained, and away from heat sources.
Chemical & Fluid Handling
Automotive fluids and chemicals require careful storage, use, and disposal.
- Read SDS: Always review Safety Data Sheets before opening any container.
- Storage: Keep flammables in approved metal cabinets away from ignition sources. Store acids/bases separately.
- Spill Response: Use certified absorbent pads, neutralizers, and dispose of waste according to local regulations.
- Never Mix: Combining brake cleaner, carburetor cleaner, and other solvents can create toxic fumes or fires.
- Disposal: Oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze, and batteries must be taken to certified recycling centers. Illegal dumping carries heavy fines.
Vehicle-Specific Precautions
Hydraulic jacks can fail without warning. Always use rated jack stands on proper lift points. Test stability by shaking the vehicle before crawling underneath.
- Battery Safety: Remove jewelry. Disconnect negative terminal first, reconnect last. Ventilate when charging.
- Airbag/Restraint Systems: Wait minimum 10 minutes after disconnecting battery before touching SRS components. Consult service manual.
- Brake Fluid: Absorbs moisture rapidly. Keep reservoirs covered. Flush per manufacturer intervals.
- Exhaust & Catalytic Converters: Contain toxic residues and reach extreme temperatures. Allow full cool-down.
- Rolling Hazards: Always engage parking brake, chock wheels, and use transmission lock pins when working on drivetrain.
