Academic Support

What licensing terms apply to academic downloads?
All public datasets are released under CC BY-NC 4.0. Commercial or derivative uses require a separate license. Academic publications using our data must cite "1990 Web Archive, [Year]" and include the snapshot DOI.
How do I get institutional Shibboleth access?
Contact your university library's digital preservation liaison or email us at partners@1990webarchive.org with your institution's SAML metadata. We typically configure federated access within 2 weeks.
Are there rate limits on the Research API?
Yes. Standard academic accounts are limited to 500 requests per minute and 10GB per month. High-volume computational humanities projects can apply for elevated quotas upon proposal review.
Can I use archived content in thesis publications?
Absolutely. We encourage scholarly use. Please use our auto-generated citation tool for accurate DOI linking. If your thesis requires raw HTML reproduction, ensure it falls under fair use/fair dealing guidelines for your jurisdiction.
Do you provide IRB documentation support?
We provide standardized data provenance certificates and retention policies that satisfy most IRB requirements. For sensitive collections (e.g., personal GeoCities pages), we offer redacted academic copies to protect privacy.
